Electron spin resonator Electron spin resonance spectrometer
Overview
An unpaired electron placed in a magnetic field absorbs microwaves with energy corresponding to Zeeman energy splitting (electron spin resonance), and is used to measure unpaired electrons in substances. Using the hyperfine structure of atomic nuclei with magnetic moments around unpaired electrons as clues, the types of radicals can be identified and their amounts can be measured. Similarly, by determining the structure of paramagnetic lattice defects in crystals and by using the fact that they are generated by radiation, we can measure past exposure doses of samples to determine accidental exposure doses, and determine exposure doses due to natural radiation. Dose can be used to date geological and anthropological samples. In the case of a powder sample, it is measured by placing it in a standard quartz sample tube, but it is also possible to measure a single crystal with a goniometer (uniaxial) and measure an aqueous solution by using a special cell.
