FT-IR Microscopes
OutlineOutline
Atoms in molecules and solid crystals vibrate at frequencies determined by the binding environment. Since the value corresponds to the thermal radiation region up to about 3000 cm-1, the local structure of the substance can be analyzed by spectroscopic observation of the resonance absorption of infrared light. This device consists of a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (Nicolet iS50 FT-IR) and an infrared microscope (Continuum FT-IR Microscope). The latter performs spectroscopic measurement while confirming the excitation light position. It has the highest operability of all commercially available devices and is excellent in optical throughput, and supports various advanced and convenient measurement methods such as ATR and spatial division analysis by specular reflection measurement and mapping measurement using them. Since the microscopic resolution is governed by the diffraction limit, it is limited to about 10 microns, which is the infrared wavelength. Raman spectroscopy is recommended for vibrational spectroscopy with higher spatial resolution.
