Laser Ablation Inductively coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry
OutlineOutline
This instrumentation system is composed of a Thermo Fisher Scientific iCAP-RQ single-collector quadrupole ICP-MS combined with a Teledyne Cetac Technologies Analyte G2 laser ablation system that utilizes a 193-nm ArF excimer laser. Diameter and shape of the laser can be changed from 1 μm to 100 μm and from circle to square, respectively. Chemical composition and isotope ratio of unknown solid samples can be measured by this system. A surface of unknown sample is ablated with the laser in a gas-tight chamber, producing a stream of tiny particles that is transported in a carrier gas to the ICP. The particles are vaporized and converted to ions in plasma. The ions are separated based on their mass-to-charge ratios by the mass spectrometer and quantified by a detector. The detector is equipped with a multiplier that amplifies the signal of a single ion by about 1 million times, so that the concentration and isotope ratios of elements from several ppm to several ppt order can be analyzed. Moreover, element mapping can be made by the stage on which unknown sample is put is moved constant velocity during laser ablation.
